Britons' ideal home is big, green and out of town
Published: 28/08/2007
The nation's ideal home is a detached, new-build house in the country, according to a survey by Halifax mortgages.
Taking 'location, location, location' as their mantra, 30 per cent of people told Halifax their ideal home would be stationed in the countryside.
A detached home, meanwhile, was the ideal house type for 50 per cent of people, helping them escape noisy neighbours, while 22 per cent of homeowners preferred new-build housing to older generations of home.
"The preference for new build detached properties shows that people want their home to be personal to them and that space and privacy is also important," commented Phil Jenks, head of mortgages at Halifax.
A spacious home was, unsurprisingly, favoured above cramped conditions, with homeowners hoping for three bedrooms, open-plan kitchen-cum-living areas and a conservatory.
But it seems living in the lap of luxury was not the sole criterion when seeking a new home, over sixty per cent of people showed their green credentials by stating that they would prefer a home with energy-saving features already installed.
